More walking was the order of the day today as we decided amidst an air of indecision to walk to Leith out by the Forth of Firth. Its the place were the old HMS Brittania royal yacht is moored and we decided to treat ourselves with a cooked breakfast at the hotel before setting out. We were again blessed with nice weather and the walk from the hotel to Leith took about an hour walking at a leisurely pace. Parts of it were not particularly picturesque as we headed through the outskirts of Edinburgh city centre.
Arriving in Leith and walking along the waterfront, its clear to see there is a major ongoing development of the whole quayside area. At the moment this amounts to exclusive apartments and a shopping centre called the Terminus; which we made a beeline for. The customary stop for coffee and a quick look around some of the shops was nice and relaxed away from the hustle and bustle of Princes Street. We decided against a look around the Royal Yacht and inside just managed a glimpse of it from the upper floor of the shopping centre.
We decided to return to the city centre but chose a taxi instead of walking and soon found ourselves at St James shopping precinct. Another retail trip through there brought us out at St Andrews square and Georges Street. We enjoyed a drink to refresh ourselves before heading back to the hotel for a change of clothes. We certainly were racking up the miles walking!!
We chose to stay close in the evening and explore the pubs and shops around Grassmarket where we were staying. We visited the Greyfriars Kirkyard behind our hotel made famous by Greyfriars Bobby (and saw his statue!) and also found an amazing vintage clothing place. If you ever needed a decent fancy dress costume this is the place to go. I was tempted by some of the military uniforms until I realised practically that I would never wear them!!! We sampled a couple of the pubs close by before stopping for a bite to eat at Maggie Dicksons.
We then returned to the for a quick drink before turning in for the night….
We have had a lovely time exploring Edinburgh and the time has flown. Tomorrow we return home ready for the Easter weekend….
